Between The Birches

Leslieville Toronto, On.

Long, narrow lots in Toronto can be tricky – and we love tricky. This Leslieville property gave us just that kind of challenge. The client wanted a backyard that could do it all: a place to work outside, unwind after a long day, and host friends without feeling cramped.

Our solution? We broke the lot into distinct “rooms,” each with its own purpose, so the space feels bigger than it really is. A linear boardwalk ties everything together, acting as both a literal and visual connection between the areas. Every step along it reveals something new, keeping the backyard interesting while still functional.

We started by defining the spaces based on how they’d be used. A cozy lounge for wine with friends, a dining area perfect for family meals, and a chill spot tucked in the back to escape for a moment of quiet. Each zone has its own personality, but together they create a seamless flow that makes the whole backyard feel bigger than it is.

Once the concept and layout get the client’s thumbs up, we bring the yard to life in 3D. This step lets everyone see how the spaces, plants, textures, and materials will work together before any real-world digging begins. It’s a way to explore, tweak, and fine-tune the design so that when it’s built, it feels effortless and exactly right.

The maples

vaunghn, On.

Steep slopes don’t scare us and this property proved why. The backyard had a stunning backdrop of mature maples, but the slope made it feel unusable. Our clients wanted to make the most of the yard without losing the lush greenery that sold them on the property.

Our solution was to embrace the elevation. By breaking the yard into distinct levels, each with its own purpose, the space feels expansive instead of awkward. A spill-over feature adds drama and a gentle soundtrack. Every corner has a reason, every level a view, so the property works hard without compromising the natural beauty that made it special.

We started by creating a custom curvilinear pool that works with the slope instead of against it. The pool doubles as part of the retaining structure, seamlessly blending function with form. Next to the pool spill-over, a cozy sunken firepit creates an intimate gathering spot, while a sun deck above overlooks the water, giving a perfect vantage point to take in the backyard and the surrounding greenery. Each element connects visually and spatially, turning the slope into a layered, inviting outdoor experience.

Render to Reality

Once the concept and layout are approved, we bring the backyard to life in 3D. For The Maples, this meant seeing how the pool, spill-over, firepit, sun deck, and surrounding plantings would work together on the slope. Designing in 3D not only helps visualize how everything integrates with the terrain but also gives the future contractor a clear picture to accurately quote the job.

Construction

Once the final drawing set is complete, it’s sent to trusted contractors to bid on the project. For The Maples, Darsan Contracting was chosen to bring the design to life. Throughout construction, we maintain close communication with the team, addressing any issues or adjustments as they arise to ensure the project stays true to the design and flows smoothly from start to finish.

Final Build

Now complete, The Maples backyard feels expansive, functional, and connected to the surrounding trees. Each level has a purpose, from the sun deck overlooking the pool to the cozy sunken firepit beside the spill-over. What was once a steep, unusable slope is now a layered, inviting space that works for everyday life, entertaining, and simply enjoying the natural beauty that drew the clients to the property in the first place.

frequently asked questions

Absolutely! A design is an excellent tool for calculating project costs. By creating a layout, we can adjust the details and sizes of different areas to fit your budget. You might have grand ideas like outdoor fire pits, kitchens, or extensive pool cabanas, but when it comes to budget estimation, you might decide that a $20,000 outdoor kitchen is better invested in a larger cabana with retractable screens, for example. We can help you price each area of the design, making it easier for you to weigh your options and make informed decisions for the final product.

I don’t really have a budget, but I also don’t know how much landscaping costs. Are you able to help me figure that out?

As a designer, you need to be a bit of a chameleon. With ever-changing design trends and diverse client preferences, we excel at turning your ideas into the perfect vibe you're after. Whether you desire a contemporary design with clean lines, a formal look with boxwoods and hydrangeas, or a sustainable layout featuring native plants and a wild aesthetic, we can curate it for you. From small urban backyards to expansive estate properties, we can bring any vision to life.

Can you design different scales of projects? And different styles?

Designs can encompass all aspects of your landscape project, from pools and hot tubs to cabanas and pergolas, outdoor kitchens, putting greens, and detailed planting and lighting plans. Whatever your vision may be, we’ll make sure it’s included.

What aspects of a landscape design can you create?

We collaborate with a select team of preferred contractors, matching them to your project based on style, location, budget, and personality. If you choose to work with your own contractor, we can provide them with your completed design package to ensure your vision is brought to life.

I notice that you are a design-only firm…do you have an installation team?
